Mental health problems Autism diagnoses are rarely made before the child is 5 years old, although measures work best before.

Autism is a congenital developmental disorder that can cause extensive difficulties with social interaction. Autism is visible from the child is small, and before the child is 3 years old, the difficulties will be so clear that it is entirely possible to make a diagnosis. A new American study shows that autism diagnosis is often not made until the child is 5 years old.

They write further:

In the United States, more than half of children with autism receive at least one psychoactive drug, including antidepressants, sleeping pills or antipsychotic drugs, although none of these drugs have been shown to have an effect on the main symptoms of autism. This may be a consequence of the late diagnosis of autism.

Early intervention in the form of facilitation, training and structured follow-up of these children is effective in giving the children a good start in life - and better prospects for functioning in life. These measures are important to get started as early as possible - and it is therefore important that autism is detected earlier.
