Hopelessness is an impoverished feeling that can occur with mental illness, and which carries the risk of suicide. It can often be a matter of a depression that gives a feeling of life is hopeless. It is important to take the feeling of hopelessness seriously, and seek help - early!

What is hopelessness?

Hopelessness is a feeling that conditions will never improve, that there is no solution to a problem, and for many it leads to a feeling that dying of suicide would be better than living.

When you feel that life is hopeless, there is a high probability that you have a depression, and untreated depression is a very common cause of suicide.

People often express hopelessness in statements they make, such as the following:

 





  1. Things will never get better.
  2. There are no solutions to my problems.
  3. I will never be happy again.
  4. I will never get over what happened.
  5. I never see things get any better.
  6. There is no point in trying anymore.
  7. I just want to give up.
  8. Things are hopeless.
  9. I feel so hopeless.
  10. There is no hope for me.
  11. What do I have to look forward to?
  12. The future is empty for me.
  13. I just see that things will get even worse in the future.
  14. Everything goes downhill.
  15. I will never come back to the way I was.
  16. It's too late for me.
  17. There is nothing I can do to make things better.

 

Hopelessness and depression 

You are not depressed when you feel sad for a day or two, you are depressed when you experience a prolonged period of sadness that interferes with your ability to function. It is believed that depression occurs due to an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. It's a disease. And it is entirely possible to treat.

Unfortunately, many people do not receive treatment for depression, and thus are at risk of suicide. If you have or have any of these symptoms below, you should seek help immediately:

 





  1. Consistently sad for two or more weeks
  2. Lack of energy
  3. Problems concentrating
  4. Sleeps too much or too little
  5. Eat too much or too little
  6. Feeling worthless
  7. Feeling of hopelessness

  9. Negative or pessimistic thinking
  10. Lose interest in activities that you have previously had
  11. Crying often
  12. Pulls you away from social contact with others
  13. No longer care about personal appearance

Many people do not think about going to a doctor when they are depressed. They do not think at all that they may have a depression, but are hung up on the strong feeling of hopelessness. However, it is important to seek help. There can be many reasons for depression, and there can be many measures that can make the depression go away. 

 

Hopelessness and suicide

Hopelessness is an impoverishing feeling that empties life of meaning and content, and that leaves a void where the thoughts of death creep in. When hopelessness takes over, suicidal thoughts give the illusion of a solution to the seemingly insoluble. But suicide is an irreversible solution to a temporary problem, and is never a good solution!

Numerous studies have shown that feelings of hopelessness in connection with a mental illness can lead to suicide. Two such studies were conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine: one study examined nearly 2000 psychiatric outpatients who were considered at risk of suicide, and the other examined approximately 200 psychiatric patients admitted to psychiatric hospitals, who were believed to be in the danger zone for suicide.

All patients were assessed for the degree of hopelessness, based on a scale known as the "Beck's Hopelessness Scale". In the following years, patients' condition was recorded, and it was found that significantly more suicides occurred in the group of people who showed the highest levels of hopelessness.

It is important to know that when someone expresses feelings of hopelessness, may suffer from depression or a similar disorder, and must get an assessment as soon as possible.

When life is feeling hopeless

It is important to know that there is help! Effective treatment can eliminate or significantly reduce the feeling of hopelessness. Depression is completely treatable and the vast majority of people who receive treatment get better. But sometimes you have to try different help offers before you find the right help!
