The psychosis came almost three years earlier in patients who had used cannabis. Reducing cannabis use can delay and perhaps prevent psychosis.

This is what forskning.no writes in an article that puts the spotlight on research findings about the use of cannabis and the connection with the development of psychosis.

Cannabis accelerates the development of psychosis

Forskning.no writes that research findings have been made which show that cannabis smokers developed psychosis around 2,7 years earlier than those who did not intoxicate themselves. On the other hand, it was not found that alcohol use alone accelerated the development of psychosis.

- The findings support the hypothesis that cannabis accelerates schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, perhaps through an interaction between genetic and environmental factors, or by disrupting brain development, writes Forskning.no.

- The researchers also believe that the results support the hypothesis that cannabis may be a cause of psychosis.
